MOUNT KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK


Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks on the continent. Its distinctive silhouette and snow-capped peak form one of the most breathtaking sights on the continent.Kilimanjaro is effectively the world’s largest single mountain, a freestanding entity that towera an incredibly5km above the surrounding plains.
Kilimanjaro is notable for its dramatic geographical features as well as beautiful mountain vegetation, abundant bird life, and plentiful game.
Kilimanjaro National Park takes in the area above the 8,850 feet, or 2,700 meters, on the mountain. It includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. In addition, the Park has six corridors or rights of way through the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. The Forest Reserve, which is also a Game Reserve, was established in 1921; the Park was established in 1973 and officially opened in 1977. Mount. Kilimanjaro National Park is situated in North Tanzania between Moshi River and the Kenyan Border.

Inside the park, a number of mammal species have been recorded above the treeline. Some of them are elephants, several species of rodents, grey duiker and eland, bushbuck, red duiker, the endangered Abbott’s and buffalo.

Bird species like lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus, hill chat Cercomela sordida, Hunter's cisticola Cisticola hunteri, and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird Nectarinia johnstoni have also been found but most of them are few in numbers. The limited range of species at higher altitudes includes ‘high altitude specials’ such as Alpine chat and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird.

Montane forest, moorland, upland moor, alpine desert, and alpine bogs represent the vegetation of the park and support the wildlife in the National park.


Getting There:
128 km (80 miles) from Arusha.
About one hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro airport.


What to do
The most popular activity is an attempted hike to the summit, which requires a minimum of five days using the Marangu Route, the most popular and easiest option, but also the most crowded and ecologically compromised. There are several trekking routes to reach the summit and most of them traverse through a landscape that is unforgettable and a wildlife that is amazing. Major routes are Marangu route, Mweka route, Machame route, and Shira route.
Increasingly popular are half-dozen other ascent options, including the very scenic Machame and Rongai Routes, which are uncrowded by comparison to Marangu, but also costlier.


When to Go
The best time to visit Kilimanajaro National Park is from July to October and from December to March. Clearest and warmest conditions from December to Febuary.


Lodges and camp site:
There are pleasant Huts and campsites on the mountain. There are several hotels and campsites outside the park in the village of Marangu and town of Moshi that provide decent accommodation for travelers.


Marangu Hotel: This comfortable is situated back along the Moshi road 5km before marangu. This Hotel has a long-standing reputation for organizing reliable Kilimanjaro climbs.


Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort: Situated about 2 km further out of Marangu, Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort has an attractive setting rural setting in cultivated footslopes dotted with relict forest patches.


Kibo Hotel: Kibo Hotel stands in attractive flowering gardens roughly 1km from the village centre towards the park entrance gate.
