TANZANIA SAFARI INFORMATION
THE SERENGETI
Serengeti National Park which covers 14,763 sq km, is flourishing with magnificent wildlife. It lies between the shores of Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the South, and the Great Rift Valley to the east. As such, it offers the most complex and least disturbed ecosystem on earth.
The park features endless rolling plains, and is contiguous with Masai Mara National Park in Kenya. Serengeti is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuary in the world and an estimated 3 million large animals roam the plains. On it its vast, treeless plains are tens of thousands of hoofed animals, constantly on the move in search of fresh grassland.
One of the Serengeti’s main attractions is the annual migration of wildebeest herds in search for better grazing. Every October and November, more than a million wildebeest and about 220,000 Zebras travel south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the tropical rains, and then journey west and north after the long rains in April to June.
Tanzania Wildlife Safari Attractions in the Serengeti:
A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it to support more than 30 species of large herbivores and nearly 500 species of birds. Its landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the concerted action of wind, rain and sun. It now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly, wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Small rivers, lakes and swamps are scattered throughout. In the south-east rise the great volcanic massifs and craters of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Each area has its own particular atmosphere and wildlife.
The Serengeti boasts large herds of antelope including Patterson’s eland, Zebra, gazelles, lion, leopard, Cheetah, Hyena, Impala, and large herds of giraffes. Nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded in the park. The Serengeti is an opportunity for one of the best game- viewing in Africa.
When to Visit:
The conservation of wildlife in the Serengeti is the greatest between about December and June, although the park can be visited rewardingly at any time of year.
The Serengeti’s climate is warm and dry. The tropical rainy season is from March to May, with short rains from October to November. The Serengeti is lush and green after the rains, but a steady drying up follows which inhibits plant growth and encourages the animals to migrate in search of waters. If you are primarily interested in the wildebeest the best base from about December to April is at one of the camps near seronera or in the southeastern part of the park. The famous crossing of the Grumeti River, which runs through the Park’s Western corridor, usually takes place somewhere between May and July, although the actual viewing window can be quite short. In particularly dry years, the herds tend to move northwards sooner. The northern Serengeti, around Lobo and Klein’s gate, is a good base during the dry season, particularly between about August and October.
Serengeti Safari Activities :
The Serengeti is synonymous with vast herds of game, predators and open savanna and the most popular way to experience this is taking a game drive. The Seronera Valley provides for some of the best game viewing.
A highly enjoyable way to experience the Serengeti is via Balloon Safari. A balloon safari over the plains is one of the more popular activities allowing for a different view of the wildlife and landscape. The balloon Safari offers unparalleled panoramic balloon views of the awe-inspiring landscape. Only two safari balloons fly each day, with a capacity of only 12 people for each balloon safari.
Maasai Cultural Visits: The Serengeti area is the home of the Maasai and other peoples and trips can be organized to experience the cultures of Tanzania. Visits to local Ololosokwan Maasai manyattas offer a rare insight into the ancient customs of tribal life.
Bush banquets: Enjoy exciting bush breakfasts, sundowners and romantic bush dinners with magnificent views over the northern Serengeti.
Walking is a way of experiencing nature up close and learning about the smaller things that make up the wilderness.
